Accessible Information Standard Primary Care Toolkit

What is the Accessible Information Standard?

The Accessible Information Standard has a been a legal requirement for NHS and adult social care providers since 2016.

It gives a clear approach to meeting the information and communication support requirements of disabled people. This includes d/Deaf people, people with visual impairments, learning disabled people, neurodivergent people and all other people with impairments who face barriers to accessing information and communication. They could be patients, service users, family carers or parents.

Hear from June, one of our Patient Champions.

The toolkit

The toolkit is a bite-size guide to implementing the Accessible Information Standard. It was a result of a project for GP Practices in Manchester with local disabled people’s organisation Breakthrough UK and funded by NHS Greater Manchester.

There is lots of great information out there already on the Accessible Information Standard, but a lot of it is long or difficult to find. We have summarised the essential points in this toolkit, and we encourage you to follow the links for more detailed learning.
