Improving ADHD services for children and young people in Greater Manchester.

NHS Greater Manchester wants to improve children’s Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) services and would like to hear from you. We want to hear from people living with ADHD, their family members or carers, and also want to hear from anyone working with people who have ADHD in Greater Manchester.
This project is part of a bigger piece of work called our ‘Neurodiversity Programme’ to improve how we care for children with conditions like ADHD and autism.

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common condition in children and young people that makes it hard for them to focus, sit still, and control their actions or behaviour.

ADHD is part of a group of neurodevelopmental conditions – things that affect how our brain works.  Other neurodevelopmental conditions include autism and speech and language conditions.  Neurodevelopmental conditions are not mental health conditions.

Whilst we are working to improve all neurodevelopmental services, this work is focusing on ADHD.  Based on national figures, we estimate that there are nearly 30,000 children and young people with this condition in Greater Manchester.

Get involved

We have worked closely with professionals from health, schools and social care, as well as families, children and young people to understand the issues with services and how to improve them.
Now we want to hear from more families, parents, carers, children and young people and staff to understand what you think about our plans.

There are several ways in which you can have your say, all options will allow you to share your thoughts and experiences, feel free to use one or more of the options:

Join a lived experience group:

Please be aware that being part of a group will involve attending lived experience meetings. The engagement of the groups is expected to last around 10-12 weeks.

This will be a group that will advise and guide the process of how we gather views and experiences. The group will review the detail of how NHS Greater Manchester engages with members of the public and analyse what people have told us through the engagement activity.

The lived experience group will require you to attend online sessions which will take place on the following dates/times:

  • Tuesday 3rd December 2024, 6pm-7pm
Introductions and why we are here
  • Tuesday 17th December 2024, 6pm-7pm
We will start to share the early findings of engagement feedback and double check them with you.
  • Tuesday 14th January 2025, 6pm-7pm
We will run through the draft report and ask you for your opinions and feedback. This will involve discussing recommendations that have come out of the engagement.
  • Tuesday 28th January 2025, 6pm-7pm
Together we will discuss whether we understand the needs of everybody in our communities (for example people with disabilities, different ages, differences between girls and boys etc.)
  • Tuesday 25th February 2025, 6pm-7pm
Discuss how the feedback has influenced the future plans for children and young people’s ADHD services. Capturing anything that we may have missed.
  • March dates to be confirmed

If you would like to join the Lived Experience Group, please could you contact gmhscp.engagement@nhs.net or call 07786 673762.

We are holding two focus groups. The focus groups will help NHS Greater Manchester review experiences, gather the thoughts of people from across Greater Manchester and identify potential opportunities for change.

Your contribution and input in these sessions will help us to review the services currently provided.

We will keep all information safe and confidential, it will be used to influence any improvements to ADHD services across Greater Manchester and not shared anywhere else.

There are two possible dates to attend and will be one off events:

  • Tuesday 19th November 2024 between 5pm and 7pm – Online (Microsoft Teams)
  • Thursday 28th  November 2024 between 10.30am and 12noon (Face to face in central Manchester)
