MMR available in pharmacies

Close up of two red blotches either side of the word measles. MMR available in pharmacies.

Pharmacies across Greater Manchester are offering the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to make it quicker and easier for people who have yet to be vaccinated to catch up.

Anyone aged 16 and over who has missed their MMR vaccinations can walk into the participating pharmacies below to get their MMR vaccination from a highly-trained pharmacist from April 8, 2024.

Children aged five and over who are otherwise unable to get the MMR vaccination can also use the service.

No appointment is needed, but there may be a wait for the pharmacist to become available.

Measles cases are rising in Greater Manchester

The service is in response to the rise in the number of cases of measles across Greater Manchester.

Measles is one of the world’s most infectious diseases with estimates showing that one infected adult or child can pass the disease onto around 15 other unvaccinated people. It spreads very easily among those who are unvaccinated, especially in nurseries, schools and universities.

Catching measles can lead to life changing issues for adults and children, such as blindness, deafness and swelling of the brain (encephalitis). Some people, including babies, pregnant women and people with weakened immunity, have an increased risk of these complications.

There is currently no medical treatment for measles, however, two doses of the MMR vaccine can give effective lifelong protection against becoming seriously unwell with the disease.

The MMR vaccination is not advised during pregnancy, but you can be vaccinated straight after giving birth, even if you are breastfeeding.
