Same Day Emergency Care

Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) operates seven days a week, offering timely treatment for patients referred by their GP, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), Urgent Treatment Centre, or the Community Rapid Response Team.

The service provides a range of clinical interventions including medical assessments, diagnostic tests, x-rays, Doppler scans, intravenous (IV) therapy, and acute frailty evaluations.

SDEC is delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprising doctors, advanced clinical practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, healthcare assistants, and administrative support staff.

Bolton Same Day Emergency Care unit provides rapid assessment and treatment of patients who do not need admission to hospital.

Open 7 days a week, often from early morning (around 8am) to late evening (around 8 to 10pm).

Patients can be referred to SDEC treatment through different routes, including:

  • Following streaming or triage in emergency departments (EDs)
  • Direct referral from GPs
  • Direct transfer from ambulance services
  • GP to referrals are made via switchboard, asking for the medical referral/advice bleep.

Located on Ward 9, on the first floor above the Emergency Department and close to the main entrance of the hospital at Fairfield General. Open 8am until midnight, 7 days a week. A frailty service is also available 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday.

The Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) provides same-day emergency care (SDEC) for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment with the aim of getting patients home safely on the same day. The Unit is staffed by our team of Acute Physicians, with input being given by specialist teams.

The Ambulatory Care Unit Clinics (SDEC) are open between 8am and 9pm, 7 days a week however patients attending ACU should arrive no later than 6pm.

The Ambulatory Care Unit is located on the ground floor of the main hospital building.

Same-day emergency care (SDEC) for medical patients at the Royal Oldham Hospital. Patients are assessed, diagnosed and treated in most cases on the same day depending on the outcome of their investigation.

You may be referred to the Medical SDEC Unit by:

  • Your GP
  • The Emergency Department (ED)
  • The Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
  • An outpatient clinic

The Same Day Emergency Care unit will care for between 20 and 30 patients a day, with the aim of each patient being treated, and discharged in the same day, and so avoiding the need for a hospital admission.

It is currently open 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6pm at weekends.

Patients cannot self-refer.  Access is via a GP practice, the North West Ambulance Service or another NHS service such as an Urgent Treatment Centre.

SDEC2 is a part of the Emergency Department at Salford Royal Hospital where patients can be seen, treated and discharged with follow up care where appropriate.

SDEC2 is open from 7.30am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Patients can only be referred for Same Day Emergency Care by a community Health Care Professional such as a GP or Advanced Care Practitioner, a Clinical Assessment Service such as NHS111, or streamed by the Emergency Department. Most referrals are immediate but some patients may be given a next day appointment depending on urgency of need.

The Same Day Emergency Care Unit offers same day urgent care to patients who have been identified as not requiring hospital admission with a condition and could be treated within the same day. It is located Hartshead North – Ground Floor
