FOI 2026/1561

Reference FOI 2026/1561
Description Responsibility for non-contraceptive IUD/coil provision
Date Requested 19/01/2026
Date Replied 10/02/2026
Category Acute & Community Services Commissioning

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I request the following information:

  1. Whether patients seeking IUD/coil fitting for non-contraceptive medical purposes are expected, under local commissioning arrangements, to access this care via:
    a) sexual health services
    b) GP services
    c) community gynaecology services
    d) secondary care gynaecology
  2. Any assessment, analysis or internal correspondence held by the ICB relating to the impact of this pathway on patient waiting times.
  3. Any guidance provided to providers on referral routes for patients who are not eligible for contraception services due to lack of pregnancy risk.
  4. Any reviews or discussions held by the ICB regarding access to IUDs/coils for non-contraceptive purposes.

Please provide the information in aggregate form where applicable.

  1. Patients who require an IUD/Coil fitting for non contraceptive medical purposes will access this care via their GP’s in the first instance.

All Secondary Care Gynaecology providers in Greater Manchester offer access to this and a referral from the patients’ GP will be required.

Where a community Gynaecology service exists in a Locality, the GP is also able to refer to these services, assuming the patient is clinical suitable. Generally, these services are more suitable for this type of referral, so if they are available, this would be the most suitable option for patients.

  1. This has not been undertaken.
  2. There is nothing in place as providers only undertake activity that is commissioned from them.
  3. NHS Greater Manchester (NHS GM) is currently undertaking a review of Gynaecology provision in Greater Manchester to support commissioning intentions for 2026/27.
