I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
I would like to know if there is local data available on the number of people resident in Trafford who have a primary diagnosis of vascular dementia and are currently receiving fully funded NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) support.
If the data is available, please provide:
The most recent and accurate figure for patients registered with a vascular dementia diagnosis is 585, (December 2025) which is directly extracted from the NHS Digital table for patients aged 65 and over. While dashboard data suggests vascular dementia accounts for around 27% of dementia by type in Trafford, applying this percentage to estimates does not provide a confirmed count of diagnosed cases.
Primary Care Dementia Data, December 2025 – NHS England Digital
The Trafford locality patient record system does not define a primary diagnosis for patients in receipt of CHC funding, as such, we are unable without reviewing all records within the system to identify this data.
Therefore, this section of your request is exempt by virtue of the following exemption, Section 12(1).
Section 12(1) does not oblige a public authority to comply with a request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of complying with the request would exceed the appropriate limit.
The Freedom of Information Act allows Public Authorities to decline to answer FOI requests when we estimate it would cost us more than £450 (equivalent to 18 hours, calculated at £25 per hour) to identify, locate, extract, and then provide the information that has been asked for.
There are currently in excess of 150 patient records which would need to be manually reviewed, and it is estimated a search of each file would take approximately 15 minutes.
Due to the volume and complexity of the data involved, it would require a disproportionate amount of time and resources to locate, extract and collate the data, equating to approximately 37.5 hours. Therefore, on this occasion it is with regret NHS GM cannot process this section of your request further.
Although we cannot answer your request, in line with section 16 of the FOI Act – advise and assist, you may wish to consider what other information may be of use to you from NHS GM. However, please be aware that we cannot guarantee at this stage that an additional request for information will fall within the cost limit, but NHS GM would do our upmost to assist you.
