Category Medicines Optimisation

I would like to know the process and guidelines you have set to review and decide who stops promazine and who receives it, to keep people safe during either of the decisions.

I would also like to exercise my right of the freedom of Information act with regards to;

  1. Who makes the decision is it to deprescribed promazine to each individual?
  2. The review process the GP should follow
  3. The safety procedures for patients you’ve put in place with deprescribing medications and for patients who will be staying on the medication?
  4. The reasons for the scheme?

In May 2025 a position statement was published by GMMMG regarding oral Promazine- This statement was developed as a collaboration of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. The position statement is accessible via the GMMMG website under the GMMMG Guidance, Medicines and devices recommendations.

  1. The decision to deprescribe promazine is assessed on an individual patient basis with the responsibility of review being dependent on where the promazine was initiated- within primary care or secondary mental health services.
  2. If the patient was commenced on promazine within primary care the use of promazine should be reviewed during the next routine primary care appointment.

Where the patient is open to mental health services and the promazine was initiated or recommended by a specialist the use of promazine should be reviewed during the next routine outpatient appointment.

If the patient was commenced or initiated promazine by psychiatry but no longer open to secondary mental health services a local agreement should be reached on the review and management of this cohort. Please refer to position statement on GMMMG for further information

  1. Refer to Position Statement
  2. Refer to Position Statement
