Every year, thousands of people in our communities are harmed by the three biggest killers: tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food and drink

Health leaders across Greater Manchester and Humber and North Yorkshire have  partnered with three national organisations to launch a new toolkit:

  • Action on Smoking and Health (ASH)
  • the Alcohol Health Alliance
  • the Obesity Health Alliance

It is designed to support regional and local authorities in tackling the harms caused by alcohol and unhealthy food and drink. It builds on the successes of tobacco control policy.

This framework provides clear actions aimed at protecting residents from harmful commercial environments.

By applying five high-impact actions coherently across alcohol and unhealthy food and drink—as seen with tobacco—we can make a real and lasting difference to health outcomes in our communities.

  • Regulate advertising – to prevent promotion of unhealthy products
  • Shape use and environment – to reduce availability
  • Influence price and affordability – to influence purchasing and consumption decisions
  • Communicate health messages – to inform of risks and benefits
  • Provide treatment – to those at risk of harm
