People living across Greater Manchester are being reminded that there are just two weeks left to take part in a public consultation on NHS-funded IVF services. It closes on Tuesday 29 July 2025.
So far, more than 1,000 people have shared their views. NHS Greater Manchester wants to hear from even more residents before the deadline.
The consultation focuses on a proposal to make IVF access fairer by offering one full NHS-funded cycle (plus an additional attempt if the first is cancelled) to eligible women aged 39 and under. This would make it the same offer across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester.
At the moment, the number of IVF cycles people can access on the NHS varies depending on which borough the live in. Feedback so far shows that many people strongly oppose reducing access to just one cycle, calling for at least two or ideally three NHS-funded cycles in line with clinical guidance.
This consultation is not proposing changes to the eligibility criteria or the current offer of one cycle for women aged 40-42, which follows national guidance. Instead, it focuses on creating a fair and consistent offer for women aged 39 and under who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the GM Assisted Conception Policy.
Dr Claire Lake, deputy chief medical officer at NHS Greater Manchester, said:
“We’ve already heard from over a thousand people and we’re incredibly grateful for every response, but there’s still time to have your say. IVF is a hugely important issue for many individuals and families and we want to make sure as many voices as possible help shape a fairer, more consistent approach across Greater Manchester. Whether you’ve experienced IVF yourself or simply care about access to NHS fertility treatment, please take a few minutes to share your views before the consultation closes.”
