Following the roll out of NHS 111 Mental Health, the 0800 crisis helplines run by Pennine Care (0800 014 9995) and Greater Manchester Mental Health (0800 953 0285) will close at 8am on Monday 3 November 2025.
You can continue to quickly and easily access urgent mental health support by phoning 111 and selecting mental health option 2. The service is available to people of all ages who need urgent mental health support. For example, if you’re feeling mentally unsafe or severely distressed.
It’s available 24/7, free of charge and you can call for yourself or someone else
Local service delivered nationally
Although NHS 111 Mental Health is a national service, you’ll be connected to your local team. A practitioner will listen and help you get the urgent support you need. With your permission, they can access your patient notes if you’ve previously received mental health support.
This will reduce you having to repeat information and allow them to better support you.
You can also access NHS 111 Mental Health online by visiting the NHS111 website.
NHS 111 Mental Health is not an emergency service. In emergency situations where there’s an immediate risk to life, or you need urgent physical care, you should contact 999 or go to A&E.
Alternatives to NHS 111 mental health
Community mental health crisis drop-in services are also available across Greater Manchester if you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis.
These community-based services offer immediate support and de-escalation in a safe environment. They provide a listening ear, crisis management, practical support and a quick referral to a mental health assessment if required. They’re an alternative to A&E and provide easier and more appropriate access for anyone experiencing emotional distress or a mental health crisis.
You can find out more about the crisis drop-in services on this dedicated page.
