People across Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire are being invited to have their say on where specialist heart and vascular surgery takes place
We have launched two public consultations on proposals for how these specialist services could be delivered in the future.
The consultations, which run until 22 September 2026, seek views on where specialist surgery would take place, while outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests and follow-up care would continue to be provided from a range of locations across Greater Manchester.
For cardiac surgery services, we are consulting on a proposal for all adult cardiac surgery to be provided from Wythenshawe Hospital. For vascular surgery services, the consultation is seeking views on a proposal for specialist vascular surgery to be provided from Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).
The consultations follow a review of specialist cardiac and vascular surgery services, which considered a range of factors including increasing demand on services, more complex patient needs and workforce challenges. The consultations give people the opportunity to comment on the proposals before any decisions are made.

Our responsibility is to make sure these services can continue to provide safe, high-quality care for generations to come. These proposals relate to services that thousands of people rely on every year, which is why it is so important that we hear from patients, families, staff and the public before any decisions are made.
“We want as many people as possible to take part in the consultation and tell us what matters most to them. Every response will help make sure local views are fully considered before any decisions are taken.”
