How your health information benefits the health of Greater Manchester

Your health matters to us, and we want you to know how your information contributes to better care for all of us in Greater Manchester.

The GM Care Record brings together your health and care information from across the NHS and social care services in our area. This single record provides our frontline staff with the full picture of care, informing important decisions about your care and treatment. It includes key details like care plans, allergies, medications, health conditions, and test results.

Every month, over 25,000 frontline staff access the GM Care Record to support the care of over 400,000 patients.

Your health information, with personal details removed, also aids research to improve health and care services in Greater Manchester. We plan to explore other health challenges, such as understanding why we face shorter life expectancy and experience poorer health at a younger age in Greater Manchester, compared to the rest of the UK.

To keep your data safe for research, we’ve established the Greater Manchester Secure Data Environment for population health research. This secure space allows approved researchers access to de-identified patient information, surrounded by virtual walls to ensure only authorised information is used. This data is never used to identify individuals; it helps researchers understand health trends at a group or population level.

Should you wish to, you have the choice to opt out of sharing your de-identified patient information for research and planning.

We are working with our partners at Health Innovation Manchester through November on the next phase of our public campaign to raise awareness of the Greater Manchester Care Record and the Secure Data Environment.
