What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a term that describes how the brain works and grows and the differences that people may have. People whose brains work in more typical ways are sometimes called neurotypical, while people with these differences are sometimes described as neurodiverse. It can make some things harder, like learning, paying attention, understanding feelings, or getting along with other people.

Neurodiversity is commonly used to describe Autism, ADHD and learning disabilities which are known as neurodevelopmental disorders. These pages are here to support children and young people and their families with neurodevelopmental disorders, however, the information and resources will be useful for all neurodivergent children and young people.

It is important to understand that each individual child and family may have their own experience and support needs.

What is the Neurodevelopmental Transformation Programme?

People across Greater Manchester are working together to make it easier for children, young people, families, and professionals to find information and support about neurodevelopmental differences, like autism and ADHD.

As part of this work, each of the 10 areas in Greater Manchester will have a Neurodevelopmental service.

The services will help children and young people and their families who are experiencing autism and ADHD related differences get the right support when they need it. They will offer support in different ways, such as in person, over the phone or online.

The services will help children and young people and their families with autism and ADHD related symptoms get the right support when they need it.

You do not need a diagnosis to get information or support.

Everyone experiences the world in their own way and understanding how your brain works can help you do well at home, at school and in your community.
