University health checklist
Starting uni can feel overwhelming – but making sure your health care is sorted will give you one less thing to worry about. Use this checklist to get organised.
1. Register with a GP Practice
-
Find and register with a local GP as soon as possible.
-
Check if your uni has its own health centre – this may be the most convenient.
-
If you have ongoing conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes, epilepsy), this is especially important.
-
Full-time international students studying for over 6 months are eligible to use NHS services.
2. Register with a Dentist
-
Register with a local dental practice (GPs can’t treat dental problems).
-
Keep up with your usual check-ups.
-
Some treatment isn’t free – but you may be able to apply for help with costs.
-
Dental emergency? Call Greater Manchester Urgent Dental Care on 0333 332 3800.
-
You’ll get advice, self-care support, or an appointment if needed.
-
Appointments cost £26.80 (free for children).
-
Check the Get To Know Where To Go Primary Care Booklet for more info.
-
3. Sort Out Contraception and Sexual Health
-
Condoms and contraception are free from any GP Practice.
-
Sexual health clinics can help with:
-
STI testing & treatment
-
Advice on safer sex
-
Support for genital warts and more
-
4. Check Your Vaccinations
MenACWY (Meningitis and Septicaemia)
-
Recommended for students starting uni.
-
Ask your GP if you’ve had it – available until your 25th birthday.
-
Best to get it before term starts.
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
-
Most people in England had 2 doses in childhood.
-
Double-check with your GP if you’re unsure.
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
-
Protects against cancers and genital warts.
-
Should have had 2 doses – if you missed them, you can still get the HPV vaccine at your GP until age 25.
Flu Jab
-
Get your annual flu vaccine if you have:
-
Asthma (using inhalers/steroids)
-
Other long-term health conditions
-
