Measles vaccination for Greater Manchester University students and staff

Cases of measles are rising among young adults in Manchester. There has been an increase in the number of young adults (aged 16-25) catching the infection.

Measles

Measles spreads very easily: even a cough or sneeze can spread the infection. It is most common in children, but adults can also be infected, particularly if they haven’t had the MMR vaccination.

Places that are full of people for long periods make ideal conditions for infections to spread quickly. Universities, colleges and schools are great environments for spreading infection.

Just 15 minutes with someone who has measles is enough time to pass the virus on. You’re infectious from when you first have symptoms (about 4 days before the rash appears) until 4 days after you get the rash.

Make sure that you’re protected with two doses of the MMR vaccine. If you’re not, come along to one of our pop-up MMR vaccination events. They’re taking place for students and staff of Manchester’s universities. If you’re not sure whether you’ve been vaccinated already, come along anyway.

What are the symptoms of measles?

Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth. A rash usually appears a few days after the cold-like symptoms.

The rash starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.
