A monthly get together for people whose lives have been affected by cancer marks its first anniversary on October 26.

Bolton 5K Your Way is a monthly event in Leverhulme Park, Bolton, for people affected by cancer. This includes people living with cancer or those how have survived it, their family and friends, those who have lost a loved one to cancer and people working in cancer services.

It is held at 8.45am on the last Saturday of each month and coincides the free 5k parkrun event.

People can walk or run as much of the 5k route as they want. Alternatively, they can cheer others on, volunteer or simply enjoy the post-event cuppa and chat in a local cafe.

Every group is led by at least one volunteer ambassador who ensures everyone gets a warm welcome.

Benefits of staying active

Bolton is one of more almost 90 5k Your Way groups in the UK and Ireland. They are part of the national Move Against Cancer charity initiative.

Staying active during and after cancer treatment has been shown to reduce fatigue, improve cardiovascular and muscular fitness, alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and even lower the risk of recurrence.

Regular physical activity can also improve emotional and psychological well-being. The social aspect of 5K Your Way makes it a fun and meaningful way to meet others with similar experiences.

Since its launch a year ago, the Bolton group has supported more than 50 people.

Ken Warner, a founding member, said: “I was already a regular at Bolton parkrun when I was diagnosed with throat cancer. I decided to carry on running throughout my treatment, but that didn’t happen once I started chemo and radiotherapy.

“I was eager to become involved with 5K Your Way. For people affected by cancer, whether before, during or after treatment, it is important to get any exercise you can manage and get out in the fresh air. It is just as import for those affected, their family and friends to socialise with people who know what they are going through.

“Whether you run, jog, or walk, being outdoors and exercising with understanding people creates a sense of camaraderie. Even if you can’t complete the full 5K,  just do what you can. Taking part is what matters most.

Join in the birthday celebrations

The Bolton group is supported by Bolton Macmillan Cancer Information and Support.

Kelly Gordon, the service manager and a 5KYour Way Ambassador, said: “It’s a wonderful group for anyone affected by cancer. The physical and mental health benefits are undeniable.

“We’ve seen so many friendships blossom and it’s making a difference to so many lives in our community. We’d love as many people as possible to join us celebrate our first birthday!”
