Other pregnancy and maternity service contacts support services
Spoons support families who experience neonatal care in the Greater Manchester area. Both on the neonatal unit and through their community work. They provide:
- Peer support delivered by those with neonatal lived experience.
- Dedicated family support to help family navigate life on the neonatal unit, the transition from neonatal to home and support post discharge from neonatal care.
- Trauma therapy and counselling.
- Community play sessions.
- Community support groups.

Dad Matters works directly with dads, helping provide information, advice, education and support for dads through the antenatal period and beyond on what to expect at each stage, the important role they have in developing babies brain and how they can support their partner and be the attuned and caring parent they want to be.
LGBT Foundation offers a variety of services across Greater Manchester to anyone who identifies as LGBT. They want to make sure that all LGBT people can reach their full potential. They do this by reducing isolation, equipping you with skills, providing mental health support, and more. You can see a full list of their services on their website.
The Healthy Start Scheme is available if you need help to buy vitamins, food, or milk. Find out more on the NHS Healthy Start.
Becoming a parent can feel overwhelming at times. Remember, your midwife and health visitor are there to help, guide and support you during the first few weeks and months. The NHS Start for Life website has more information and links for support.
The Lullaby Trust raises awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), provides expert advice on safer sleep for babies and offers emotional support for bereaved families.

Sexual abuse
The effects of childhood sexual abuse can last a long time and having a baby can be a particularly difficult time. If you have been abused, please do speak to your midwife.
The Survivors Trust is a national membership organisation supporting specialist rape and sexual abuse services in the voluntary sector. We have over 120 member organisations throughout the UK and Ireland.

Domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological (including gas lighting and coercive control), online or financial and is often a combination of these types. Pregnancy can be a time of increased risk of domestic abuse, and existing abuse may get worse during pregnancy or after giving birth.
Everyone has the right to live free from fear, violence, and abuse.
Speak to your midwife, health visitor, doctor, national domestic abuse support line on 0808 2000 247 or if you are in immediate danger call 999 and ask for the police.
Resources and support
- Hestia provides a free mobile app, Bright Sky, which provides support and information to anyone who may be in an abusive relationship or those concerned about someone they know.
- The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is run by Refuge and offers free, confidential support 24 hours a day to victims and those who are worried about friends and loved ones. Telephone and TypeTalk: 0808 2000 247
- Women’s Aid: You can telephone our helpline in the strictest confidence. Lines are staffed Monday to Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and there is an answer phone outside of these hours. A live chat service is available Mondays to Fridays between 10am and 12pm as well as an online survivor’s forum. You can also find your local domestic abuse service through the Domestic Abuse Directory.

- The Survivor’s Handbook, created by Women’s Aid, provides information on housing, money, helping your children and your legal rights. It is available in 11 other languages and an audio version. Women’s Aid has useful information about making a safety plan that applies to both women and men, including advice if you decide to leave.
- Chayn provides online help, resources and courses to support recovery. Information available in a number of languages about identifying manipulative situations and how friends can support those being abused.

- Imkaan are a women’s organisation addressing violence against black and minority women and girls.
- Southall Black Sisters information to Asian and Afro-Caribbean women suffering abuse.

- Shelter provide free confidential information, support and legal advice on all housing and homelessness issues including a webchat service.
